VisualCAM for SOLIDWORKS is integrated milling CAM for programmers who create toolpaths, simulate material removal, and post CNC output from the active SOLIDWORKS part.

SOLIDWORKS geometry remains the machining reference

VisualCAM creates machining operations inside the SOLIDWORKS environment. Stock, setups, tools, containment regions, and toolpaths are defined against the active part, so design changes and CAM edits remain in one project context instead of moving through an exported copy.

The integration is most useful when the part changes repeatedly before release. Regeneration reveals which operations still fit the revised geometry, but the programmer remains responsible for checking boundaries, clearances, fixtures, and the resulting motion.

Configuration depth follows machine complexity

The VisualCAM milling family spans 2.5-axis profiling, pocketing, drilling, and facing; 3-axis roughing and finishing; indexed or continuous four-axis work; and five-axis strategies. The relevant operation set depends on the part and machine, while simulation provides the shared check on stock removal and remaining material.

VisualCAM 2018 is the meaningful breakpoint in this two-release range because MecSoft added Automatic Feature Machining to its 2018 milling plug-ins. Standard features can move from detection into rule-driven machining, reducing repeated operation setup on feature-rich prismatic parts.

The post decides whether a toolpath fits the controller

Simulation validates the CAM motion and stock result; a post processor translates that motion into the syntax and cycles expected by a particular CNC control. Select the machine-specific post, inspect the generated code through the shop's established proofing process, and keep customized posts with the project environment. An otherwise correct toolpath can still produce unsuitable output through the wrong post.
