The model stays editable while the scene grows
Lumion separates design authoring from visualization. A Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Archicad, or other supported model supplies the geometry; Lumion adds materials, entourage, terrain, weather, lighting, cameras, and animation. LiveSync keeps supported authoring tools connected to the scene, while file import covers models that do not use a live connection.
This division is useful during design development because a geometry revision does not require rebuilding the surrounding visualization. The scene remains the owner of presentation work, and the CAD or BIM application remains the owner of the building model.
The rendering pipeline is the main release breakpoint
Lumion 12 and 12.5 center the established real-time raster workflow. Lumion 2023 adds the hybrid ray-tracing pipeline for more physically grounded lighting, shadows, and reflections, while retaining raster rendering when ray-tracing hardware is unavailable. Later offered releases extend that newer pipeline and scene-management workflow rather than changing Lumion into a modeling application.

Windows and the graphics card form one rendering decision
The Windows lookup establishes whether a listed release is eligible. Rendering capacity is the second half of the decision: a dedicated GPU is a real workload constraint, and ray tracing remains disabled when the graphics processor lacks hardware ray-tracing support. Raster rendering is the verified fallback in Lumion 2023 and newer.

Project files move forward, not back
A project saved in a newer major Lumion release cannot be opened in an older one. Keep the older installation and an untouched project copy when a deliverable must still return to Lumion 12, 2023, or 2024. Move the working copy forward only after every collaborator and render workstation can use the selected newer release.
